Previously, transgender individuals in Nagpur, needing specialized medical care, had to travel to AIIMS Delhi. The new facility eliminates that burden, offering crucial services right here in Nagpur.
AIIMS executive director Dr P P Joshi said that transgender clinical services will provide a safe and supportive environment and the medical attention the community deserves.
“the facilities include hormone replacement therapy to aid with gender transition and support overall health,” said Dr Joshi. Psychological support and counselling services will be available to address mental health concerns and promote well-being. AIIMS Nagpur will offer dermatological and gynecological care, including gender-affirming procedures and surgeries.
“Going beyond medical care, the service will start community outreach and education. We will conduct educational programmes and workshops aimed to raise awareness and understanding within the transgender community,” said Dr Joshi.
AIIMS has collaborated with Mission Vishwa Mamatwa Foundation, which will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the community’s specific needs and expand the scope of services offered.
“This initiative marks our commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to the transgender community. We want to ensure their health needs are met locally, eliminating the need for long-distance travel,” said Dr Joshi.
AIIMS will now have a dedicated registration counter to ensure a streamlined registration process for transgender patients. There will be a dedicated point of contact to answer questions, offer support, and help navigate the healthcare system.
Mohini, a representative of the transgender community who attended the launch event, expressed her gratitude. “This is a huge step forward for us. Having access to specialized healthcare services in Nagpur itself will make a tremendous difference in our lives. We are grateful to AIIMS Nagpur for taking this initiative,” she said. Apart from faculty members from AIIMS Nagpur, Dr Manjusha Giri, President IMA Nagpur, Shraddha Joshi, and Dr Barai from Mission Vishwa Mamatwa Foundation attended the launch.
