West Park Healthcare Centre’s new rehabilitation facility has achieved substantial completion.
The construction milestone represents the date when the facility is operational and was officially handed over from the contractor, EllisDon to West Park. Staff at West Park can now begin training, orientation and move-in preparations for opening day in Spring 2024.
“With demand for West Park’s services expected to grow by over 50 per cent in the next 20 years, our new facility will increase our capacity to better serve an aging population and Ontarians with complex health conditions,” said Anne-Marie Malek, West Park’s president and CEO. “Every aspect of our new hospital underscores our commitment to helping patients get their lives back.”
The West Park Healthcare Centre project is No. 56 on ReNew Canada’s 2023 Top100 Projects Report.
Features of West Park’s new facility includes:
- Six-storeys, approximately 730,000 square feet
- 314 patient beds; 80 per cent single and 20 per cent double occupancy rooms
- Advanced HVAC system that ensures 100 per cent fresh air is pumped in
- Enhanced accessibility features in its architectural design, technology and equipment solutions
- Integration of nature that creates a powerful new vision for healthcare architecture
“Ontario is investing in our health care infrastructure for future generations, and that includes Toronto’s new state-of-the-art West Park Healthcare Centre. As we work to get shovels in the ground for more than 50 major hospital projects across Ontario to add more than 3,000 beds over 10 years, West Park’s new facility will ensure that Ontarians can connect to high quality rehabilitative care, closer to home.” said Ontario’s Minister of Health Sylvia Jones.
“Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to opening the doors of this new state-of-the-art facility that will provide people in the community with access to the high-quality care they need and deserve. Our government continues to invest in infrastructure projects like West Park Healthcare Centre’s new hospital to build a better health care system that serves the needs of the people of Ontario today, and for years to come,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure.
“Infrastructure Ontario is proud to have partnered with West Park Healthcare Centre and EllisDon to achieve substantial completion on this important redevelopment project. Once fully operational, this new facility will help support the delivery of quality care for Ontarians with complex health care needs,” said Michael Lindsay, president and CEO, Infrastructure Ontario.
In June 2018, Infrastructure Ontario awarded EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare a fixed-price contract to design, build, finance and maintain the hospital’s development project. The new 730,000 square foot facility offers advanced rehabilitative and specialized complex care, helping patients get their lives back.
“Over the last five years, we have been hard at work building an accessible and inclusive space that will provide specialized healthcare services to residents in the Greater Toronto Area,” said Andrew Anderson, SVP and Toronto Area Manager, EllisDon. “As we present West Park staff with the keys to their new facility, I would like to thank our skilled project team, trade and consultant partners, and all other project stakeholders for their efforts and support to enable us to reach this significant construction milestone. It took a lot of hard work, dedication, and a solid integrated approach to reach this point and it is great to see it all come together.”
“Our facilities management team has been engaged from the design stage and is excited to have the privilege of maintaining an exemplary facility,” added Colin Flock, SVP, EllisDon Facilities Services. “We look forward to continuing our 30-year partnership optimizing the building’s performance to support West Park in continuing to provide great patient care.”
The new hospital has been designed and built to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard, which recognizes buildings with reduced environmental impacts. Some of the green features include an expansion of green space and extensive landscaping for therapy courtyards, sensory gardens, and fitness trails.
