Al-Thawra Hospital in Hodeidah achieves medical milestone with open-heart surgeries
Open-heart surgery is no longer a distant dream for the people of Hodeidah.
Today, it has become a tangible reality with Al-Thawra General Hospital launching this specialized medical service for the first time in its history.
This step adds to the hospital’s growing list of achievements over the past years, reflecting the rapid development of its medical infrastructure and offering patients greater treatment opportunities without the hardship of traveling to Sana’a or abroad.
Last year, the hospital inaugurated its diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization unit, marking a major milestone in cardiac care. That achievement laid the groundwork for today’s introduction of open-heart surgery—an advanced addition that strengthens the hospital’s capabilities and expands its specialized services.
With this development, Al-Thawra General Hospital in Hodeidah now stands among the few medical centers in the country that provide comprehensive services in cardiology and cardiac surgery. This elevates the governorate’s position on the healthcare map and reduces patients’ reliance on external medical centers.
After years of suffering and deprivation, the launch of open-heart surgery at Al-Thawra Hospital has become a beacon of hope for thousands of patients. It has ended the long struggle of having to travel to other provinces or outside Yemen for treatment, allowing them instead to receive specialized medical care close to home.
This milestone is not a coincidence, but the fruit of tireless, accumulated efforts aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacities and equipping it with state-of-the-art technology in line with global advancements in cardiac surgery. As a result, this service is set to save thousands of lives annually and boost public confidence in the national healthcare sector.
Beyond its direct medical benefits—alleviating patients’ suffering and easing pressure on central hospitals in the capital—this achievement represents a crucial step toward improving the health infrastructure in Hodeidah. It reflects a broader vision to enhance Al-Thawra Hospital’s readiness to handle advanced surgeries and expand its specialized healthcare services in the coming phase.
What further distinguishes this service is that it is offered free of charge to all patients—a humanitarian gesture that embodies the hospital’s mission to serve the community and ease the suffering of the poor and vulnerable. Providing open-heart surgeries at no cost is an unprecedented initiative in Yemen, giving critically ill patients access to advanced care that was once financially out of reach.
Despite years of hardship under aggression and blockade, Al-Thawra Hospital—receiving over 2,000 cases daily—has managed to achieve remarkable success. With limited resources and difficult circumstances, it has sustained and developed its services, culminating today in the inauguration of open-heart surgeries as a groundbreaking addition to its humanitarian mission.
On the occasion of launching the first operations, Hospital Director Dr. Khaled Suhail emphasized that this milestone is the result of perseverance, determination, and relentless effort. He described it as a “new heartbeat in the heart of Tihama” and the culmination of a long journey to build a medical institution worthy of people’s hopes and aspirations.
He said: “The introduction of this advanced service is a defining moment of humanitarian and national significance for Hodeidah’s healthcare sector. It reflects the ability of Yemeni medical professionals to keep pace with progress and to bring hope for a healthier life to thousands of patients, keeping Hodeidah a beacon of medical care that instills reassurance in its people.”
Dr. Suhail added that the first day of operations included surgeries for several patients who had undergone careful preparatory programs. He explained that the hospital has devised a systematic plan to receive cases from across the governorate in an organized manner that ensures continuity of service and maximizes patient access.
He stressed that this achievement was the result of months of meticulous preparation and equipping of the open-heart surgery unit according to the highest medical standards, enabling the hospital to provide care that meets international benchmarks.
He further noted that the specialized surgical team continues to perform open-heart operations, marking the start of a new chapter in the hospital’s record of achievements and proving the competence of Yemeni medical staff in handling such delicate and complex procedures.
He concluded that the launch of open-heart surgery represents a strategic step toward medical self-sufficiency. It reduces the health and financial burdens of patients who once had no option but to travel to Sana’a or abroad. Offering the service free of charge, he emphasized, embodies a genuine humanitarian mission to serve the people.
